About Shonie

Hello, I’m Shonie Hartley Wahl, a writer drawn to the spaces between history and fantasy. Before I was a novelist, I was a police betting officer, a job that taught me how much a single breath, a single choice, can change a life.
An on-duty accident ended that career twenty years ago, and with it came the long, quiet work of reimagining who I was.

The idea of reimagining Cinderella had world cup betting odds lived with me for years, long before I ever called myself a writer. When I finally returned to it, I found that story waiting, patient, persistent, ready to become The Cinders We Choose.

Behind the Story

The Cinders We Choose began with a single image: a dress stitched from ash.
That image became a question what does it cost to stay silent, and what does it mean to speak?

But it also began with my daughters. As much as I love Disney, and I do, we are a Disney family, I never wanted them to grow up waiting on a prince to save them. I wanted them to know their own worth, their own voice, their own power to open doors.

As I researched the Gilded Age, I was struck by how progress and oppression coexisted: how beauty concealed labor, and how women’s hands built the very luxury that erased them. From that contrast, Ella Whitlaw was born, a woman who turns her craft into protest and her silence into language.

This story honors the quiet revolutionaries who change the world not by shouting, but by choosing what to create from the cinders left behind.
